Artist Statement

Nature is in itself a work of art. My aim is to interpret its beauty, to extract the snippets which will create compelling compositions.

I strive to find the spectacular in the ordinary by looking for the interaction of light and atmospheric conditions that can transform the mundane into a work of art.

The desire to see and capture the beauty of the natural world as I travel both near and far,  fuels  my passion for photography. However, many of my favourite photos are taken close to home.

I keep post-processing of the images to the minimum required to interpret the scene as I experienced it. My photos are printed by a professional lab to my specifications and  I then frame them myself.

I hope that you enjoy viewing the photos as much as I enjoy creating them.

Biography

I am a photographer whose main interests are in nature, landscapes, wildlife and travel. I'm based in Sudbury, Ontario, where I was born and raised. I graduated from WLU in Waterloo, and had a career as a high school teacher.
I've carried a camera for as long as I can remember, beginning with photographing our family travels and my friends. From those inauspicious beginnings, I later moved on to photographing for my university newspaper. I have since taught photography in both classroom and workshop settings, and have judged a variety of photography competitions, including La Cloche Art Show and Ducks Unlimited.

I've travelled extensively in Canada, the United States, and Europe.

I have no formal training in photography. I've been inspired especially by the photography of Ansel Adams, Freeman Patterson, Galen Rowell, and Ernst Haas.
My images have been published in books, magazines, calendars, and web sites. Notable among these credits are World Wildlife Fund calendars, Brown Trout calendars, Audubon books, National Geographic publications, and Rough Travel Guide.

I've won awards in contests in National Geographic Traveler, Birder's World, Photo Life, and Nature Photographer. I've had an exhibition at Sudbury Theatre Centre and a photo in a juried show at The Art Gallery of Sudbury. My fine art prints are in several private collections in Europe, Ontario, Quebec and in the Ontario Legislature.
