I love realism and have no problem defending it as a true fine art category. It has always amazed me how someone can take some coloured pigment and arrange it with a few brush strokes to convince me I am looking at something real. When you look closely you may see how haphazardly those strokes are and that the artist was merely making a suggestion. It’s up to the viewer to believe they may be seeing an apple or a cloud!
I plan to keep making better “suggestions” in the future by training my eyes, hands, and mind to make the best art I possibly can—artwork to enrich the experience for both, the viewer, and myself.
Shortly after being born in Elliot Lake, Ontario, and the end of the uranium boom, my family moved to the Niagara region where I spent most of my childhood. My parents were both from Manitoulin Island, where our family would vacation every year. My dreams of living here came true when I was fourteen years old and we moved to Little Current where I still live today.
My experiences, as well as those shared with me by others living on Manitoulin Island, are a strong influence and inspiration to the artwork I do.
In 2015 I had a chance for early retirement and knew I would need something to do. I returned to a childhood love and began painting to occupy my time with newfound freedom from the regular nine-to-five. It’s a choice I am very grateful for making.
