I work in oil paint mostly, because I love the way oil paint moves around on the canvas. But I also enjoy watercolour and acrylic. The challenge for me in painting is in trying to bring out some significance from a small bit of ground, which we may disregard, pass by and never find again. My subject matter may be a pattern, or a rhythmic passage that I see in the undergrowth or at a shoreline. I continue to learn more and more about painting. People may be interested in the end result of a painting, but for me, the attraction is the process of painting and reaching a state of flow through that process.
"Art does not reproduce what we see; rather it makes us see" --Paul Klee
Like many artists, my interest in drawing and painting grew from a passion encouraged in my childhood by my parents and friends. After 20 years of working in software development, I received a gift of a sketchbook and a box of drawing pencils. That gift re-ignited my interest in drawing and eventually led to studying art at Alberta College of Art and Design, and at University of Calgary, where I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA). I continue to develop as an artist, and in 2012, I was juried in as an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.
