“You make this place look better than it really is.”
These words were uttered by a young teenager who came to my first art show in 2010. He could see a puzzled look cross my face, so he added, “I’ve lived on Manitoulin my whole life and you’ve shown me beauty that I’ve never noticed before.” I thanked him kindly for those words, and to this day, I don’t believe that I have received a nicer compliment.
The challenge in photography is taking a scene that is visible to anyone who cares to look and presenting it in a uniquely artistic way. With every photograph I make, I attempt to rise to that challenge. I hope that I have succeeded with the images presented here.
Peter Baumgarten is an award-winning professional photographer and educator based on Manitoulin Island where the stunning nature surrounding him inspires his work. He picked up his first camera at the age of 12 and was instantly hooked. Inspired by Canadian photographer, Freeman Patterson and his book, “The Art of Seeing” Peter is always striving to see the world in ways that most people miss.
Peter regularly leads photography courses and workshops for novice and enthusiast photographers and travels across North America as an Olympus Visionary providing lectures and seminars on landscape, wildlife, and astrophotography. As owner of Creative Island Photography, Peter has turned a life-long interest into a second career. His love of the craft has also become a great excuse to continue his other passion – exploring the great outdoors through wilderness camping, canoeing and kayaking.
Peter’s work has been published in a number of magazines in both Canada and the United States including Canadian Geographic, Shutterbug, Outdoor Photographer, Popular Photography and others. He has also been recognized for photographic excellence and vision on a number of websites. Peter maintains his own blog with an emphasis on tutorials that will assist others in bringing their photography up to the next level.
Peter resides with his wife and the comings and goings of six adult children. When not out photographing his surroundings, he continues to teach part-time, renovate his 140-year old home, garden, and participate in a local theatre group.
